Akon Enters Master Ringtone Stratosphere, Strikes Record

Akon was unceremoniously dumped by supporter Verizon Wireless following a controversial on-stage antic in April, but that hasn't slowed rapid ringtone sales by the artist. Just recently, Akon grabbed accolades as the highest-selling master ringtone artist of all time, according to information from label SRC/Universal Motown. The figures, first revealed on Thursday, show cumulative sales of 11 million master tones. The total is being driven by a number of mobile-friendly releases, including "Smack That," "Don't Matter," and "I Wanna Love You." Those songs have all earned multi-platinum ringtone sales, according to certifications issued by the RIAA. "We're thrilled that Akon has now surpassed all other artists of this era and has cemented his place in music history," said Steve Rifkind, chief executive of SRC Records.

Akon now leads a group of heavy-selling artists on the mobile deck, including Chamillionaire and Rick Ross. Artists like those are leading an urban genre that translates well into mobile arenas, mostly because of its catchy hooks and instant recognizability. Meanwhile, Universal noted that "Smack That" was the best-selling ringtone in 2006, and the all-time top seller for AT&T.

Pharoahe Monch at the SoHo Apple Store

Pharoahe did a special performance at the Apple Store in SoHo, NYC this past Sunday. Performing songs from his upcoming album Desire (in stores June 26), Pharoahe kept the 2nd floor of the store packed and nodding their heads to the new material.
