The summer time brings new albums which bring new hope us all. At first glance, what's not to like about 6 new albums debuting in the Top 10? Radio is getting something fresh and consumers are drawn to the "record stores" to see the flurry of new releases. Also, there is a great mix of old stars in Tori Amos and Rush while it looks like Ne-Yo is here to lead the R & B world.
But not everything is what it seems. Over the past year, it seems that we've seen more and more artists make a debut in the Top 10, only to quickly drop down the charts. Big first week sales are great, but who cares if no one is buying in week 2, 3 and more importantly week 52? The reason many of these newer albums are able to jump into the Top 10 is because other albums' rapidly declining sales simply can't compete with debuts, no matter how weak the Top 10 numbers are.
We're becoming accustomed to seeing big artists hovering in the 200K-300K range and fewer artists staying in the Top 10. Everyone in this week's Top 10, give yourself a big pat on the back, it's a great honor. But will you be there next week?
I'm not betting on it.
